Rural market towns look like they should have clean air. They don’t – and our children are paying the price.
Air pollution is associated with tens of thousands of deaths each year in the UK and disproportionately affects children, older people, and those with existing health conditions. Clean Air Day aims to make cleaner air a public-health priority rather than just an environmental issue.
But really, is this an issue we need to worry about here in Daffodilshire? We’re surrounded by fresh air here – aren’t we?
Stand on the pavement in Ledbury Homend while an HGV makes its way slowly through. The smell hits you before you see the vehicle – that thick diesel fog that catches in the back of your throat. You step back. You hold your breath. You wait for it to pass.
But here’s what most of us don’t know: the part you can smell isn’t the part doing the most damage. The most harmful components of that exhaust – the fine particles that lodge in lungs and the nitrogen dioxide that inflames airways – are completely odourless. By the time you can smell it, you’re already breathing in things you can’t detect at all.
Today is Clean Air Day. And while the conversation tends to focus on cities – London’s ULEZ, Birmingham’s clean air zone, motorway pollution – we want to talk about somewhere much closer to home.
The Canyon Nobody Notices
Narrow historic streets lined with three- and four-storey buildings are beautiful. They’re also, from an air quality perspective, traps.
Scientists call it the street canyon effect. Tall buildings on either side of a narrow road prevent exhaust from dispersing upward. Wind flowing over the rooftops creates a vortex that recirculates the pollution at street level — right where people are walking, children are in buggies, and dogs are being walked at nose height.

Now add a slow-moving lorry or tractor to that canyon. When vehicle speeds drop from 50 to 20 km/h, emissions of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons surge by roughly 50%. A heavy diesel vehicle idling or crawling through a narrow historic high street is emitting around twice as much NOx per litre of fuel as it would travelling at a steady motorway speed. In an enclosed canyon, that pollution has nowhere to go.
The Rural Vehicle Problem
Rural areas are often assumed to have cleaner air because there’s less traffic. But the composition of that traffic matters enormously.
In rural England, one in three cars is now an SUV – up from one in sixteen twenty years ago. SUVs produce around 25% more emissions per kilometre than a medium-sized car, and their heavier weight means more particle pollution from tyre and brake wear (which is now, remarkably, unregulated and actually exceeds exhaust particles in many places).
Rural A-roads and market town through-routes carry 84% of all UK lorry traffic. Agricultural vehicles – tractors, trailers, combine harvesters passing through in season – are subject to emissions regulations that lag years behind those applied to cars and lorries. A modern tractor may emit at levels comparable to a road vehicle from the 1990s.
And because there’s no rural equivalent of London’s ULEZ to make driving an old, dirty vehicle more expensive, rural fleets are on average older than urban ones. Older vehicles, older engines, older emission standards. The average UK car is now ten years old — and in rural communities, it’s older still.
What It Does to Our Children
This is the part that should make us all stop and think.
Children’s lungs are still developing. Their brains are still developing. And air pollution interferes with both — in ways that can last a lifetime.
- Children aged 8–10 in highly polluted areas have been found to have up to 10% less lung capacity than their peers. Experts say this deficit may never be reversed.
- A King’s College London study of over 2,000 primary school children found that exposure to diesel emissions was linked to around 5% smaller lung volume.
- The risk of clinically significant lung damage is nearly five times higher in the highest pollution exposure group compared to the lowest.
- Toddlers exposed to fine particulate pollution score lower on IQ tests — losing up to 2.63 IQ points for every 2 micrograms per cubic metre increase in pollution.
- Children at higher-pollution schools develop cognitively around five months more slowly than those in cleaner environments.
These aren’t statistics from Beijing or Delhi. The lung development research that found effects at very low pollution levels was conducted in Stockholm – a city with roughly half the air pollution of the cleanest parts of London. We do not need to be in a city to be in a problem.
In 2017, over 2,000 childcare and education providers in England and Wales were in areas that breached legal pollution limits. Some of those will be rural. Some will be on narrow canyon high streets where a school run coincides with a market day lorry delivery.
The Bus Is Part of the Answer

Community led bus services like the Daffodil Line aren’t just about getting from A to B. They’re about what doesn’t happen when you take them: one less car navigating a narrow market town high street; one less set of brake pads disintegrating into the air as vehicles queue behind a tractor; one less exhaust adding to the canyon vortex at the moment a parent is pushing a buggy past.
In rural areas, where cars tend to be older and higher-emitting than in cities, the air quality benefit of each car journey replaced by a bus journey is actually greater than national averages suggest. Transport modellers tend to use average fleet emissions figures when calculating the benefit of modal shift. In a rural market town, the real benefit is higher.
A single bus carrying 20 passengers can replace up to 20 car journeys through a canyon high street. On a market day, when footfall is highest and the street is busiest, those 20 fewer cars in the queue represent a meaningful reduction in the pollution burden at pushchair height.
What You Can Do Today
Clean Air Day is a good moment to think about the air our children and grandchildren are breathing – not just in cities, but on the high streets and school routes of our own market towns.
- Take the bus for a trip you’d normally drive – even once a week makes a difference to fleet loading on congested town centre routes
- Think about school drop-off: parking a short walk away and walking the last stretch removes your vehicle from the most sensitive zone
- Talk to your town council about idling restrictions near schools and market-day gathering points
- Support community transport services – every passenger is a car journey not made through a canyon high street
- If you’re involved in planning or transport decisions, ask for localised air quality monitoring at child breathing height in your historic town centre — not just area-wide data
