18–24 May 2026 | Dementia Action Week
This week (18–24 May) is Dementia Action Week, and here at the Daffodil Line we want to take a moment to think about what getting out on the bus can mean — not just as a way of getting from A to B, but as something genuinely life-changing for people living with dementia, and those who care for them.
Why Getting Out Matters
Around 900,000 people in the UK are living with dementia. For many, the simple act of leaving the house — popping into Newent for a coffee, taking a ride through the orchards to Ledbury, or watching the Herefordshire hills roll by — can make a real and meaningful difference to their wellbeing.

Research consistently shows that social connection, fresh air, and gentle stimulation all help support people living with dementia. A familiar journey, a chat with a friendly driver, a recognisable face at the market — these small things matter enormously.
The Bus as a Lifeline
One of the things we hear most often from our passengers is how much the Daffodil Line has given back a sense of independence. For older passengers, and those with memory conditions, knowing that a reliable, friendly bus passes through their village is genuinely reassuring.
Our drivers know our regulars. We’re a community bus — not a number on a timetable — and that human connection is at the heart of what we do. If you, or someone you know, is living with dementia and hasn’t yet tried the Daffodil Line, we’d love to welcome you on board.
Dementia-Friendly Travel: A Few Tips
If you’re supporting someone living with dementia, here are a few simple ideas for making a bus journey a positive experience:
- Travel at quieter times — mid-morning journeys are often calmer and less rushed.
- Sit near the front — easier to chat with the driver and feel oriented.
- Bring something familiar — a favourite snack, a familiar bag, or a small photo can help someone feel settled.
- Let the driver know — our drivers are happy to give a little extra time and reassurance. Just say hello and let them know where you’re headed.

Dementia Action Week is led by Alzheimer’s Society and this year’s theme is all about encouraging people affected by dementia to act now — whether that’s seeking a diagnosis, reaching out for support, or simply doing something that brings joy.
You can find out more and access support at alzheimers.org.uk.
And if you’d like to plan a trip on the Daffodil Line, our timetable and route map are right here on the website. We run through some of the most beautiful countryside in Daffodilshire — and we’d love to see you on board.
